Read about Electronic Components
Electronic components play a vital role in electrical circuits. Electronic components are expanding the scope of electronics science. They help understand the workings of circuits. The variety and characteristics of these components, such as nonlinear behavior, small size, integration capabilities, and low cost, make electronics science more influential than the electrical field. Circuits are primarily based on five types of components. These are divided into two major categories: passive components and active components. In this article we will discuss in detail about electronic components, types and functions.
Electronic components are elements that help make electrical circuits function. They are an essential part of any electronic system. Their function is to control the flow of electrons, or electrical current. Because these components are small, they can be easily transported from one location to another. Each electronic component has two or more terminals. When several electronic components are assembled together on an electronic board (such as a PCB – printed circuit board), they form a functional electronic circuit. Each component has a unique and specific function within that circuit.
An electrical circuit is a group of many electronic components connected together. Depending on the ability to generate energy, these are divided into two categories: active and passive electronic components.
Passive components are devices that do not require external power to actively function. Components such as resistors, capacitors, and inductors primarily function to resist, store, or control the flow of voltage within a circuit without actively producing a signal or current. Other passive components such as diodes, transformers, thermistors, varactors, and transducers also contribute to the reliability and efficiency of a circuit. Passive components are one of the components with passive functions. Without these components, electronic circuits cannot be assembled.
Resistors, capacitors, and inductors are called passive components. You can start your search to know the meaning of these electronic components-
A resistor is a passive two-terminal electronic component whose primary function is to control the flow of electric current. It is added to electronic circuits to regulate current, divide voltage as needed, and provide appropriate biasing to different parts of the circuit.
Resistors are used in almost every electronic circuit as they are one of the most basic and essential components. They are designed to provide a specific amount of resistance, thus controlling the flow of current. They are usually color-coded to indicate their resistance.
A capacitor is a passive electronic device that stores and releases electrical energy. It is primarily used in electronic circuits for functions such as decoupling, filtration, and energy storage. A capacitor consists of two conducting plates separated by an insulating medium (dielectric). When connected to an electrical source, it becomes charged and retains its charge even when disconnected from the source. When connected to an electrical load, it conducts the stored energy toward the load. The capacitance of a capacitor represents the amount of energy it can store.
An inductor is a passive component in a circuit with two terminals. It stores energy in its magnetic field and returns it to the circuit. Inductors store and release magnetic energy. They are used for applications such as filtering, impedance matching, and energy storage. Current flowing through a coil produces a magnetic field. Inductors are primarily classified into iron core, ferrite core, and air core.
Active components are electronic devices that require external power to function. They primarily control the flow of electric current in a circuit. They typically perform functions such as rectification, component amplification, and switching. Active components are divided into two groups: diodes, transistors, and integrated circuits. Active components also include vacuum tubes and electron tubes, such as diodes and triodes. Semiconductor devices include diodes, LEDs, and transistors.
Diodes allow current to flow in only one direction. They are used for signal modulation, rectification, and switching applications. When reverse biased, diodes block electrical current. Devices including integrated circuits (ICs), sensors, and transistors require electrical power to operate.
A transistor is an electronic component that amplifies electrical signals. A transistor is an electronic component that amplifies electrical signals. They are used in digital logic circuits, amplifiers, and voltage regulators. Transistors are often used as switches. In contrast to a simple switch, they can convert a small current into a much larger one. Transistors are combined with logic gates to form a system called a flip-flop. When a transistor is on, it indicates a “1” and when it is off, it indicates a “0.”
An integrated circuit (IC) is a small chip containing millions of electronic components such as resistors, capacitors, and transistors. The primary function of an integrated circuit is to perform high-level functions, including amplification, complex digital calculations, and signal processing. The purpose of an IC is to increase the efficiency of electronic devices and reduce their manufacturing size and cost.
The functions of electrical components are given below-
Resistors : The primary function of a resistor is to control and limit the flow of current in a circuit. Resistors operate according to Ohm’s law. Their resistance can be either fixed or variable. They become operational when current flow needs to be controlled.
Electric Switches: An electrical switch is a device used to turn an electrical circuit on or off. When the switch is turned on, the circuit is complete and current begins to flow. When the switch is turned off, the circuit is broken and the current stops.
Capacitors :A capacitor is an electronic device that stores electrical energy. It is used in voltage spike protection, voltage control, and signal filtering.
Magnetic or Inductive Components: These electrical components operate according to Faraday’s law, in which a current flows from left to right in a coil.
Diodes : Diodes are used to convert AC current to DC current. In modern circuits, they are used for overvoltage protection.
Transistors : Transistors function as switching devices in electrical circuits. A single transistor creates complex electrical systems.
Integrated Circuits or ICs: The integrated circuit functions as an oscillator, microprocessor, and timer. It is the basis of devices such as mobile phones and computers.
We learned that electronic components are divided into two categories: passive and active. Passive components, such as resistance, inductance, and capacitance, do not transfer electrical energy. Active components, such as voltage and current sources, transmit electrical energy through a circuit. All of these components are essential to any electronic system. Without them, circuit construction and operation would be impossible. They are used in everyday life in mobile phones, computers, televisions, fans, and more.
